Planning of film

We have planned to start filming our opening sequence this weekend, and we aim to get the whole of the filming done so we can start the editing next week. We have decided what costumes we are going to wear, and we are going to be shooting our opening sequence at my house. He have chosen to use the bedroom where is has a mirror. The garage to make the atmosphere look scary and the living room back doors for walking in and out. Also we are going to need to go to the train station which is 10 minutes away from my house so this wouldn't put us out too much.
We have discussions about our plans for the weekend which will be Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th of January. Also what times we will meet up and traveling etc.

Started Editing

Today we started to edit what we shot on Sunday and Monday. I was cutting up the film on Final Cut and making sure I did every shot. As a group we watched through the footage we have taken and realised that we must of recorded over a shot that we took.
The shot that we recorded over was of Efosa walking close to the camera and also a worms eye view of his feet. So we decided that Efosa would record this himself as we have no other time to meet up and to change anything.

Also after the editing on Sunday and Monday night I feel that I played my part very well in recording the shots at the station for the beginning of our opening sequence and also acting as a kidnapped girl in our opening.

Plans for next lesson

We plan to carry on cut our film and editing the different shots together. Researching opening sequence before helped us and me a lot and gave us idea's in what we should include into ours. Because of this I think we are going to create a very powerful and frightening opening.

Updates on Final cut editing

This week Jess got all the shots onto final cut in the right order so that it is ready to edit and put in different transformations. As I am not familiar with the software Final Cut and Efosa is, we have decided to make him the main editor but now and again I give in my input and say what we can make better to look more effective. But up till now it is going very well.

Sound effects/sound for film

Sounds
Jess has started to create the music for our opening film. She thought would be a good idea to use a Jewellery box noise and make it creepy and sound more scary because she is sitting at a dressing table.
It has taken me a lesson to create the sound and it lasts for 7 seconds which is quite short but we are going to make it echo out so we can use another sound after.

Lesson updates

In today's double lesson Efosa is carrying on editing our Opening Sequence while I have been working on the sound for some of the shots in the film.
Our editing of the film is coming to the end but we need to add sound and titles still. So that's why I have been trying to create the sound so we can put it all together.
Meanwhile Chloe has been focusing on planning the meetings and creating meeting logs to we are update to date which all our work.

Our Film Showcase

We had our film showcase today were we watched everyone's opening sequence and then wrote our responses to them. For example we stated what we liked most about them and also what we could improve on. We had a number of people that gave us feedback and wrote they wrote and rated the Sound, Characters and Camera etc. on a evaluation sheet.
Most people hadn't quite finished there films for example the sound wasn't in time or the cuts hadn't been put together properly but we took this into consideration and just wrote what we think personal would improve their film.

When we showed our opening to the class we had to stand up and introduce the characters that are in the movie and also say where it was filmed and also we explain that the credits aren't in order yet and there is no sound as we haven't finished that yet.

This is just a rough working copy of our film. It's about 60% done at this stage. We just hadn't made the necessary cuts and we needed to cut some footage out. We listened to the feedback from the rest of the class and made some changes

Changing the dialogue of film

We have decided to do a voice over in our film where we see Efosa and Jade on the phone to each other. This is because Jade's voice doesn't fit well with the genre and our teach told us that her accent sounds Essex. So we decided to use Chloe's voice instead and also we have made the timing right because before the dialogue was too quick. We did the voice over on garage band and also used a microphone.

there was a problem because we could hear interference from mobile phones so we had to make sure that we cut this out.

After we have added this voice over into our film there is not much else that we need to do. So we are hoping to finish our film by Thursday at 10:50.

Some Problems the group faced

As a group we have come across many problems and mistakes that may of caused our group to be behind. But we have sorted these out in various ways. For example one problem that we have faced was the lesson when everyone learnt how to use the editing software final cut Me and Chloe was not here on this lesson so Efosa had to go through it with us again so this caused our group to be behind for a couple of lessons but we soon managed to catch up. We did this by doing a lot of work quickly so we wasn't behind anymore.

Another problem we come across was that we didn't live near to each other so it was hard to meet up to sort things out. Because Me and Chloe are close friends we live near each other so it was just getting together with Efosa and Jade to do filming etc. As we was working more together at school we became closer so it was easier to get together for filming round each other houses. But the filming and meetings were mostly done round my house as it was the easiest to get to.

Lastly another problem was the dialogue in our film which I have already stated but this put us behind a lot because it meant that we had to cut the dialogue out from Efosa and Jade and do voice over using Chloe's voice instead of Jade's but we managed to sort this out and now the dialogue fits perfectly with our film.

Feedback questions

The final question that we have asked our audience which I think is the most important 'Did you notice any serious issues such as continuity errors, strange edits- Did anything not make sense to you?'
"Story line was a bit confusing but knew roughly what was going on, sharpen the shots so they are closer together"
"Some shots were to dark, also footsteps looked a bit fake"
"Sound needs a bit of work, didn't understand the train scene"
"Over edited"
"Camera shots slighty jumpy"

Final Editing

Because we are coming close to finishing our final opening sequence, we sat with Efosa today and went through our film and changed the bits we didn't think worked that well and also made the overall film shorter because we thought some clips dragged on too much and also need to make some scenes brighter as it's quite hard to see. So this lesson we made a rough final version just so we can show the rest of our class and get some feedback.

Feedback questions

Our Second question that we asked our audience 'Who do you think the target audience is?'
"Horror, 16+"
"Horror teens and mid-age"
"18, Indie Horror"

Most of the answers we got were all the same and me and my group was happy because this is the audience and genre we was aiming for.

Our Production Company

This is our production company that I have made. When it plays the word 'LIGHTBULB' flickers like a actual light bulb. It is effective because it's dark and connects with our actual film opening.

We also came up with other ideas for a production company such as
Wonky Donkey Productions
Lighthouse Productions
Newhouse Productions
Light bulb Productions
Transform Productions
But we thought that Light bulb would be the best option as I had a really good idea of how it would look.

Jess, Chloe and Jade made this on macromedia flash.

Feedback questions

The first question we thought we should ask the audience is 'What was especially good about the film?'
Here are the answer we got from our audience

"Really good editing (Red Lipstick with black and white shot) Good camera work and use of sound"
"I liked the end when the camera gives different shots of the eye for example, and also when we see and here the train"
"Camera work was very good, good use of colour, lighting was very good"
"Good variety of speed (slow motion)"
"Never see the face until the end shows suspense, good shots of knife and shots of make up and nail varnish at the start"
"Good acting"

Final Editing Stages

Our deadline is Thursday so this means that we dont have much time at all to complete all of the work set. So because of this Jess, Chloe and Efosa stayed for a hour after school so we could sort out the music for our opening, as we have not got any sound on the video yet except for digetic sound which was there when we filmed it. Also where there was interruptions with phones and other electronic equipment there is a lot of buzzing and hissing that we had to make sure was gone before we could send it of. This is what we sorted out today and tomorrow in our lesson we plan to finish the music ready to start the evaluation.

Making Changes to the storyboard

we decided to scrap our initial storyboard idea and start a new idea for the storyline. The initial idea was having Jade alone in a house and her having nightmares about a man stalking her.We as a group met up afterschool to decide on the new idea and we decided that Jade would keep Jess hostage and Efosa was the secret villain that was on the phone to Jade. We don't see him till the end though.

Original film title

We originally thought of calling the film "The Hiding". Because Efosa was meant to the be the hidden killer but we changed the title to Captured as it has a double meaning. Captured as in Efosa eventually capturing Jess. And captured as in the photography sense when Efosa takes a picture of Jess at the end of our opening sequence.

Discussion on editing

After looking at the preliminary footage we filmed, we decided that we wouldn't over edit anything. We would keep it within the genre of horror, adding an ethereal effect to the whole sequence. The feedback we got from the rest of the class in the showcase was mostly focused on our over editing. This time we tried to cut out the silly effects and focus more on the cuts.

Dialogue In Film

We have decided to do a voice over in our film where we see Efosa and Jade on the phone to each other. This is because Jade's voice doesn't fit well with the genre and our teach told us that her accent sounds Essex. So we decided to use Chloe's voice instead and also we have made the timing right because before the dialogue was too quick. We did the voice over on garage band and also used a microphone.

After we have added this voice over into our film there is not much else that we need to do. So we are hoping to finish our film by Thursday at 10:50.

Organisation activities such as costume and prop lists

This is where we have filmed our opening and also what day we did it, what props we have used on each day, the technical equipment we used and finally costumes and extra props. This helped us remember what we needed to bring to the location of where we was filming.

Organization-Costumes and props

We picked costumes that reflect the genre of film opening sequence we were making. Ours was horror so we had Efosa; wearing a black long coat and black gloves, Jade; wearing a black top with black leggings. Jess wore a greyish dress. All the colours were dark and demure which are appropriate to the theme of horror. The props wear make up accessories which Jess had in her house. We paid close attention to the mise-en-scene because the background and the surroundings gave the audience clues as to what was going to happen next. The applying of the makeup after the appearance of the blush and lipstick. When Jade twirls the knife it's implied that Jade was planning to use this against Jess.

Preliminary Sequence

This is our preliminary sequence. We tried to show the basics of final cut express and show off the fundamentals of editing such as cuts, fades, transitions and effects. We followed the criteria by using the required shots and showing a conversation between two people.

What we've learnt from filming and editing the preliminary sequence is that we don't need to over edit and put so many effects to make a film look good. In our opening sequence we focused more on the cuts and fades rather than the effects. Also we've been able to put a contrast over the whole film which makes it look on the whole a lot more proffessional

GarageBand

We are currently researching diegetic sound and music to add into our opening. We are looking for creepy sounds, e.g. we liked the idea of a jewelry box song, which can actually sound really scary. Also non garageband you can find such a huge variety of instruments that fit our theme. We have mainly focused on orchestral sound effects as we feel they will fit our opening best.

Sound for Opening Sequence

I thought it would be good to use a musical box sound for when we do a pan of Jade sitting at a dressing table, because it will make the atmosphere more scary and creepy.

It has taken me a lesson to create but it still needs a little bit of work because it is only 7 seconds long. but i have decided to fade it out so then we can use another sound.

Editing

In the past few lessons we have been working on editing our opening sequence and preparing the documents for scanning so we can get then out up on all of our blogs. We have finished quite a lot of the editing of our sequence and are working at the speed we would like to be. We have the majority of our work done and just have to finish up a few small pieces of work but we can easily do this if we carry on the way we have been working.

Editing continued

As Efosa knows how to work the Final cut the best we have decided to make him the main editor. But every lessons either Me, Chloe or Jade will hep and give him our ideas. So while Efosa is doing the editing we are doing the theroy work and updating blogs etc. We are a quarter of the way through editing our film and I think is coming together very well so far.

editing our Opening Sequence 2

When we started editing on Final cut, not one of the members in our group understood how to use the program. We begun to cut our clips and got them into the right order etc, and now we have found another editing program which is easy to work, and currently are editing our sequence, it is going well.

Editing our Opening Sequence

Last week in media we started to edit our opening sequence. we was find the program Final Cut very hard to use because we was trying to put different cuts between each shot but the program wasn't working properly.
Because of this we decided to use a different program that we can edit on which we found easier to use. it took us a while to get used to using the program but at the end of the lesson we got through a quarter of the sequence.

Editing

Today we have started to edit our Opening Sequence. We are working on Final Cut Express where we have been cutting and chopping all our different shots to start to fit them all back together for our final opening. We need to start to speed up a bit as we are behind everyone else. Efosa is the person who is best with the editing as he was the main person who edited our Preliminary Sequence. We are al helping out and working as a team to edit the piece. It is all starting to come together so the group is very excited. We now need to start thinking about the music and sound effects for our Opening which we will find on Garage Band.

Group Discussions

We have discussed the various different elements that we need to focus on for a opening sequence. We have came to various conclusions with setting, costumes, props. We are filming in the setting of Jess' house, we have chosen the outfits to match the personalities of the characters so Jade and Efosa wore black to show their creepy evil personalities and Jess wore her white shirt to show her purity but Jade put red and black make-up on her to show how she had corrupted how innocent she was. The main prop we used was the knife which helped the audience to establish the genre of the film.

Group Filming

After filming on Sunday, we realised that we needed to do some extra filming as various parts of the filming weren't as we wanted them to be and we needed a few more shots so we had a variety to choose from. Now that we have got the extra shots, I think our editing will be easier. We worked well as a group and we were very quick with the filming of the shots. It was overall a productive session, so we now need to get on with our editing.

Filming on Sunday 30th January

We started to film of opening sequence but we was running out of time and it was getting very late. So we didn't finish the whole of our opening. Due to this we are going to carry on filming on Monday 31st so we can get it finished ready for editing on Wednesday.

So far our film has gone to plan except one slight problem that we had was we got to the station and the video camera run out of battery, but we managed to film everything we needed and just make a few adjustments to our storyboard.

Also some of the angles that we wanted to use didn't work as well as we thought so we changed these to make them look more effective.

We aim to finish of finished all our filming by tonight 31st January.

Plans for Filming and Shooting

Last week we were going to start filming but due to complications we had to move our filming schedule along a week. This hasn't really effected our timing schedule as we will do all our filming on Sunday 23rd and have the rest if the weeks to edit and perfect our piece.
